UPDATE: York police officer seriously injured in collision with mail truck

Investigation underway after officer suffers life-threatening injuries when his vehicle was rear-ended

UPDATE, June 16: York Regional Police have reported the officer's condition has been upgraded to stable.

"He remains in hospital receiving treatment for his injures," police said on Twitter. "On behalf of the officer’s family and our members, we thank the community and our partners for their ongoing support."

A York Regional Police officer is in hospital with life-threatening injuries after being rear-ended by Canada Post truck in Markham this morning.

Police said just before 2:30 a.m., an officer was sitting in his parked police vehicle on Steeles Avenue East near Highway 404. The male officer had completed a traffic stop when his vehicle was struck from behind by the transport truck.

While the officer was transported to hospital, the truck driver remained at the scene and was not injured, York Regional Police media relations officer Const. Laura Nicolle said.

Toronto Police Service is leading the investigation into the incident.

Steeles Avenue East eastbound from Townsend Road to Woodbine Avenue and westbound from Woodbine has re-opened at about noon after it was closed for the investigation this morning.
