York police charge man in grandparent scam investigation

Investigators with the York Regional Police Financial Crimes Unit are urging any additional victims to come forward after a 20-year-old man was charged in connection with a grandparent scam investigation. 

The investigation began on December 12, 2022, after an 85-year-old victim reported losing $10,000 in a grandparent scam. The victim had received calls requesting money to help a relative who was in jail or in legal trouble. After the victim took out the money, a suspect posing as a courier attended their location to pick it up. 

After a lengthy investigation, the suspect courier was identified and has been charged. 

York Regional Police is releasing a photo of the accused and urging any additional victims and anyone with information to come forward.

Jake Boyko, 20, of Brossard, Quebec faces charges including:

• Fraud Over $5,000 
• Extortion
• Possession of Proceeds of Crime
