Warrant issued for suspect in hate-motivated incidents in Markham, Richmond Hill

Investigators with the York Regional Police Hate Crime Unit are appealing for assistance in locating a man wanted in connection with multiple hate-motivated incidents in the cities of Markham and Richmond Hill.

Between June 2 to June 22, 2021, officers received reports of several incidents, including road rage, assault, criminal harassment, mischief and uttering threats toward numerous victims. Officers were able to link these incidents to the same suspect.

Investigators believe some of these incidents may be hate motivated as they involved offensive comments by the suspect regarding race and ethnicity.

Investigators have identified the suspect and a warrant has been issued for his arrest. Anyone with information on his location, or information on the incidents, is asked to contact investigators. Citizens are urged not to approach the suspect but to call police immediately. The accused is urged to seek legal advice and turn himself in.

WANTED: 

  • Joseph Denis Lukacsi, 50, of no fixed address 
  • 5’10”, 170 lbs., grey hair, beard 
  • Blue flame tattoo on his left forearm 
  • Wears dark clothing, a dark-coloured baseball hat and a blue, camouflage face covering (seen in the photo) 
  • Driving a black, two-door Kia Forte

York Regional Police does not tolerate hate crime in any form. Those who victimize individuals based on race, national or ethnic origin, language, colour, religion, age, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity or mental or physical disability will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
