UPDATE: 1 person in hospital following Newmarket house fire

The cause of the fire on Sheldon Avenue is under investigation

One person remains in hospital following a fire that began in the rear of a house on Sheldon Avenue in Newmarket Sept. 2.

A tenant was also transported to Southlake Regional hospital and discharged following treatment for smoke inhalation.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, according to Central York Fire Services, and the Ontario Fire Marshal's Office has been notified for further investigation.

On arriving at about 5 p.m., fire crews reported heavy smoke and fire coming from the rear of the residence. 

Firefighters entered through a side door after discovering the front door was blocked by debris, according to the CYFS incident report.  

Six apparatus and 26 firefighters, an incident commander and chief officer were at the scene, as well as York Region Paramedic Services, York Regional Police and local utility authorities.

A fire at the rear of a house on Sheldon Avenue in Newmarket was quickly extinguished late this afternoon, Sept. 2.

Three Central York Fire Services crews responded to the call, while the York Regional Police helicopter circled above the Yonge Street and Davis Drive area at about 5 p.m.

Police blocked access to to the entire street, from Walter Avenue to Newbury Drive, to the dismay of area residents attempting to return home at the end of the work day.
