A convenience store on Main Street South in Newmarket was robbed early this morning by a suspect armed with a large knife.

York Regional Police responded to a call for an armed robbery at the Circle K convenience store just south of Davis Drive March 28 at 3 a.m.

A man wearing a balaclava and carrying a hunting knife came into the store and demanded money from the register and then fled on foot with cash, police said in a news release.

No one was physically harmed, police added.

Minutes later, officers stopped a person on Davis Drive who matched the suspect's description and who was carrying a knife.

A 17-year-old male from Newmarket, who can't be identified, was arrested and police seized a knife and a quantity of cash. He was charged with robbery, disguise with intent and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

Police are advising businesses to stay alert and contact them immediately if they see any suspicious activity. It advised keeping the business well lit, storing large bills in a time-delayed safe, using security and surveillance systems, and considering locking the door and buzzing customers in at night when there are minimal people or staff around.
