Less than an hour after a suspect wrestled with a man on the front porch of his Richmond Hill home to take his keys and then flee in his vehicle, he was arrested Sunday by York Regional Police officers and the canine unit, with the assistance of Provincial Carjacking Joint Task Force investigators.

The victim was entering his home near Observatory Lane and Yonge Street Feb. 3 around 10 p.m. when a man approached him and demanded the keys to his Subaru Crosstrek, police said in a news release. They fought over the keys, with the suspect eventually overpowering him and fleeing in his vehicle.

Less than an hour later, officers located the stolen vehicle a short distance away in a plaza parking lot at Major Mackenzie Drive West and Yonge. When the suspect exited a store, he was taken into custody, police said.

Morgan Schmidt, 27, of no fixed address is charged with robbery, theft under $5,000, shoplifting, possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000, and obstruct peace officer.
