Sleeping driver faces drug, weapons charges

Police say the accused was found asleep at the wheel at the intersection of Keele Street and King Road

Investigators with the York Regional Police #1 District Criminal Investigations Bureau have charged a man with impaired and firearms-related offences after he was found asleep in his vehicle in the intersection of Keele Street and King Road in the Township of King.

On Monday, Dec. 28, 2020 shortly after 12:30 a.m., York Regional Police were called to the intersection of Keele Street and King Road for a report of a driver asleep behind the wheel. When officers arrived they found a driver alone and asleep in his vehicle, which was in the middle of the intersection blocking traffic on both north and south Keele Street.

Officers were able to wake the driver who showed obvious signs of being impaired. While speaking with the driver, officers saw drug paraphernalia inside of the vehicle. The driver was placed under arrest and transported to #1 District.

During a search of the vehicle, officers located a loaded handgun. Following a test performed by an officer who is a drug recognition expert, the driver failed. He has since been charged.

Charged:
    •    Matthew Strachan, 33, City of Barrie

Charges include:
    •    Impaired operation
    •    Careless storage of a firearm
    •    Unauthorized possession of a firearm in a motor vehicle
    •    Possession of a loaded restricted firearm with ammunition
    •    Contravention of conditions of licences x4
    •    Possession of a controlled substance - fentanyl
