SIU investigating York police after crash involving 13-year-old driver

A 13-year-old passenger was seriously injured, and the 13-year-old driver was also transported to hospital, after colliding with a truck in Toronto while fleeing police

York Regional Police is being investigated by the province’s Special Investigations Unit following a collision involving a 13-year-old driver, which resulted in serious injuries to a 13-year-old passenger, early this morning in Toronto.

According to preliminary information, a York Regional Police officer spotted an SUV with two young occupants in the area of Dufferin Street and Centre Street in Vaughan at approximately 4:40 a.m. today, Oct. 15.

When the officer attempted to stop the SUV, the vehicle fled from the scene, according to an SIU news release.

A short time later, the SUV collided with a truck at Dufferin and Finch Avenue West in Toronto.

The 13-year-old SUV passenger was transported to hospital for treatment of serious injuries. The 13-year-old driver of the SUV was also transported to hospital.

Three investigators and two forensic investigators have been assigned to this incident, the SIU said.

Anyone with information regarding this incident should contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529. The Unit is also urging anyone who may have any video evidence related to this incident to upload that video through the SIU website.

The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
