The province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has been called in after a teen was struck by a vehicle following a pursuit involving York Regional Police on Friday in Vaughan.

Shortly before 7:30 p.m., police were patrolling at the Canada’s Wonderland parking lot when an officer saw someone “behaving suspiciously,” according to a news release. The male ran away and the officer followed on foot.

Shortly after, a 17-year-old pedestrian was struck by a vehicle on Jane Street at Norwood Avenue. Officers found him with serious injuries. He was taken to hospital, where he remains in life-threatening condition.

Police believe the pedestrian who was struck is the same person who ran from the officer. The SIU is investigating, while the York Regional Police Major Collision Investigation Unit is “conducting a parallel investigation.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact the SIU. Information can also be provided anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or 1800222tips.com.
