There will be a heavy police presence on local lakes Wednesday, but it’s only a drill.

The OPP will join other police services and fire departments from the region for search-and-rescue training with the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre out of Trenton.

The training will start around 9:30 a.m. on Lake Couchiching. It is expected to wrap up by 3:30 or 4 p.m. and will also include training on Lake Simcoe.

People can expect to see a large helicopter in the air and many emergency services vessels on the water.

The goal of the training is to ensure all emergency services are better prepared to work together and with the JRCC in the event of an actual emergency.

The JRCC is the lead on all search-and-rescue operations in the Trenton search-and-rescue region, which includes central Canada.
