A 23-year-old man has been charged with dangerous driving and stunt driving and his vehicle has been seized after he was caught driving more than 200 kilometres an hour.

On May 29, 2021, at approximately 2:50 p.m., an officer on patrol spotted a vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed going south on Bayview Avenue, at 19th Avenue, in the City of Richmond Hill. The speed measuring device in the police cruiser showed the vehicle was travelling at 202 km/hr in a posted 60 km/hr zone.

The vehicle was stopped safely and was impounded for seven days.

Charges:

  • Dangerous Operation
  • Stunt Driving
  • Speeding

Excessive speed has consistently been one of the greatest contributing factors in many fatal collisions that have occurred on York Region roads. Street racers put themselves and unsuspecting road users at risk of death or serious injury when they choose to disobey traffic laws and drive without due care and control and with a disregard for public safety.

Call 911 if you see dangerous driving practices that could cause personal injury or loss of life. When contacting police, try to note the vehicle’s location, direction of travel, make, model, licence plate number and driver’s description.

Project ERASE is an awareness and enforcement campaign operated jointly by police services across Ontario, and in partnership with the Government of Ontario, with the goal of eliminating street racing and other high-risk driving behaviours. Aggressive driving and street racing are dangerous, unlawful activities which put innocent people at risk of injury or death. The real finish line may be court, fines, jail, vehicle seizure, a loss of driving privileges or even worse, the hospital or the morgue.

This investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact the York Regional Police Traffic Bureau at 1-866-876-5423, ext.7703, Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS, or leave an anonymous tip online at www.1800222tips.com
