Richmond Hill carjacking foiled when suspects see police cruiser

Investigators with the York Regional Police #2 District Criminal Investigations Bureau are seeking suspects following an attempted carjacking in the City of Richmond Hill.

On Wednesday, June 24, 2020 shortly before 11 p.m., police were called to the area of Yonge Street and Observatory Lane for a report of a robbery. When officers arrived, they found a victim, a 47-year-old man from the Town of Whitchurch-Stouffville. The investigation has revealed that the victim was parked in a nearby parking lot and as he approached his vehicle, two men approached him, one armed with a handgun and demanded his belongings, which included the keys to his vehicle.

The victim complied, but the suspects ran when they saw a York Regional Police vehicle driving in the area. Police searched the area for the suspects, but they were not located.

The victim was not physically injured.

The suspects were described as male, Black, 5’8” to 6’ tall, wearing black clothing with black hoodies covering their faces.

Investigators are appealing to any witnesses who have not yet spoken with police or anyone who may have been driving in the area at the time that may have dashcam to please come forward.
