During National Teen Driver Safety Week, York Regional Police is reminding young drivers to be safe and obey the law when operating a vehicle.

The Oct. 16 to 22 awareness campaign aims to increase safety for teen drivers, with this year's theme focusing on distracted driving. However, officers will also be out watching for dangers such as impaired driving, speeding, aggressive driving and railway safety.

Officers from YRP's road safety bureau, community services bureau, community oriented response units and uniform patrol will be out all week in increased numbers in areas known to be frequented by teen drivers, including near secondary school zones during arrival and dismissal times, as well as lunch breaks.

Vehicle collisions remain one of the top causes of death for teens in Canada. The majority of these collisions are preventable, police said, adding that parents are urged to talk with their teens about the importance of safe driving.

York Regional Police encourages citizens to do their part. If you observe instances of distracted driving, speeding, unsafe lane changes, tailgating, weaving in and out of traffic, or disobeying traffic lights and stop signs, or other unsafe driving please call police or make an online report here.

If you see an impaired driver or a dangerous driving situation in progress, or any driving behaviour that you believe constitutes an immediate risk to public safety, call 911 to report the details.
