The province's Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has charged an Ontario Provincial Police officer with sexual assault in its investigation of an alleged sexual assault last August in Aurora.

OPP Const. Robert Horton, of the Burlington detachment in Niagara, faces one count of sexual assault.

The SIU was contacted by the OPP on Aug. 20, 2019 regarding a complaint of a sexual nature against the officer, according to SIU director Joseph Martino in a news release.

The alleged sexual assault occurred Aug. 9, 2019 against a woman.

Horton is to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice at 50 Eagle St. West in Newmarket Feb. 26, 2020.

"The matter is now properly before the courts. In consideration of the fair trial interests of the accused, the SIU will make no further comment pertaining to this investigation," the SIU stated.
