Newmarket woman arrested for storage unit thefts in Orangeville

Break-ins at two locations were captured on video surveillance, Orangeville police say

A 33-year-old Newmarket woman has been arrested following two break-ins at self-storage businesses in Orangeville.

Tools and households items were stolen from four lockers at a self-storage business on Stewart Court by suspects who used bolt cutters at about 5:15 a.m. Sunday, May 3, according to Orangeville Police Service.

Then on Friday, May 8, at about 4 a.m., two suspects entered a self-storage business on Robb Boulevard. Over the course of about two hours, bolt cutters were used to break into 15 storage units, according to police. Several items were stolen.

Video security cameras at both locations captured the incidents, including the vehicle used by the suspects, police said in a news release.

On Sunday, May 10 at about 11:30 p.m., officers stopped a brown Dodge Dakota pick-up truck matching the vehicle in the break-and-enter video footage and the occupants were arrested.

Jakob William Hackson, 33, of Orangeville, is charged with 21 counts of break and enter, two counts of possession of property obtained by crime, two counts of fail to comply with a probation order and disobey court order. The accused male remains in custody pending a bail hearing in court, police said.

Heather Jean Mitchell, 33, of Newmarket, is charged with possession of property obtained by crime and fail to comply with a recognizance. She was held in custody pending a bail hearing. She has been released from custody and is scheduled to appear in court on July 20, 2020.
