Newmarket sees spike in shoplifting, theft under $5,000

Majority of the incidents were in the area of Leslie and Davis, however some occurred at residences in the northwest end of town

There was an increase of shoplifting and thefts under $5,000 in Newmarket last week, with the majority of incidents in the area of Leslie Street and Davis Drive. 

Between April 24 and 30, there were 14 incidents of theft under $5,000 reported, according to York Regional Police's community safety map. This is double the previous week when there were seven.

Of the 14 incidents, nine were shoplifting, four were at a residence, and one was theft from a motor vehicle. 

Seven of the thefts occurred at businesses and the theft from a motor vehicle near Davis and Leslie. The thefts from residences were on the northwest end of town near Carlissa Run, Mynden Way and Coachwhip Trial, which are all north of Davis and west of Yonge Street. 

There was also an increase in other property crimes last week, with eight incidents reported on the community safety map. This is a big increase from the previous week when there were zero. 

In all of the incidents reported, other property crimes refers to possession of property obtained by crime. Seven of them also coincide with the incidents of theft under $5,000 last week.

  • April 25, 2:39 p.m.: at a business near Davis and Forhan Avenue, shoplifting, open 
  • April 26, 10:00 a.m.: at a business near Leslie and Davis, shoplifting, open 
  • April 26, 3:05 p.m.: at a residence on Carlissa Run, open 
  • April 26, 3:48 p.m.: at a residence on Mynden Way, open 
  • April 26, 4:30 p.m.: at a business near Davis and Forhan Avenue, shoplifting, solved 
  • April 26, 5:31 p.m.: at a business near Davis and Forhan Avenue, shoplifting, solved 
  • April 26, 5:32 p.m.: at a residence on Mynden Way, open 
  • April 26, 5:33 p.m.: at a residence on Coachwhip Trail, open
  • April 26, 7:14 p.m.: at a business near Davis and Forhan Avenue, shoplifting, solved 
  • April 28, 10:42 p.m.: at a business near Davis and Forhan Avenue, shoplifting, solved 
  • April 29, 4:31 p.m.: at a business near Matthew Boyd Crescent, shoplifting, open

  • April 26, 5:31 p.m.: at a business near Davis and Forhan Avenue, possession obtained by crime, solved 
  • April 26, 5:32 p.m.: at a residence on Mynden Way, possession obtained by crime, open 
  • April 26, 5:33 p.m.: at a residence on Coachwhip Trail, possession obtained by crime, open  
  • April 30, 12:24 p.m.: outdoors near George Street, possession obtained by crime, solved 

According to the community safety data, last week in Newmarket there were also three incidents of missing persons, three incidents of impaired operation, one robbery, and one incident of other criminal code offences, which are all up from the previous week. 

There were five incidents of assault, three incidents of mischief, three drug violations, three theft of motor vehicles, one sexual violation, and one incident of other persons crime, but these have all decreased from the previous week.
