Newmarket man among 4 arrested in break and enter crime spree

Police say a total of 198 charges have been laid in connection with property-related crimes at 33 stores and commercial properties in Simcoe, York Region, Toronto

A Newmarket man has been arrested in connection with a crime spree of robberies at retail stores and commercial properties in Simcoe County, York Region and Toronto.

Douglas McCurdy, 31, faces several charges along with three other men, South Simcoe Police Services said.

In total, police said the street crime unit laid 198 charges following a string of property-related crimes they began investigating last July.

South Simcoe, York Regional Police and Barrie Police Service investigated 33 occurrences spanning Bradford, Innisfil, Barrie, York Region and Toronto involving break and enters at stores and commercial properties where tools, equipment and vehicles were stolen, police said.

Stolen property was recovered at five locations in Bradford and Innisfil, including eight vehicles, a skid steer, commercial dumpster, forklift, chainsaws, constructions saws, numerous pieces of construction equipment, pressure washers and about $100,000 worth of conductor wire, police said.

Charged along with McCurdy are: Eric Smith, 50; Terrence Zerafa, 30, both of Innisfil; and Walter Viveiros, 48, of Bradford.

Charges include: break and enter; theft over $5,000, trafficking stolen property; possession of property of crime and motor vehicle theft.
