A new hangar for the helicopter Air2 and officers in the air support unit is being constructed in East Gwillimbury.

The construction is in the early stage of design and is to be completed early 2025, according to a York Regional Police news release.

The air support unit has been located at a temporary site outside of York Region due to closure of Buttonville Airport in November 2023.

Parkin Architects Limited has been hired to design and provide construction management services for the hangar that will be located on lands owned by the Regional Municipality of York, near the York Regional Police Training Facility on Bales Drive.

The air support unit includes civilian pilots and tactical flight officers trained in patrol and suspect tactics. The unit supports frontline officers with criminal apprehensions, vehicle pursuits, searches for missing persons and traffic enforcement.

The force's new Air2, an Airbus H125, took to the sky in March 2023. Chosen for its agility, fuel range, power and speed, the new helicopter better serves the needs of our growing region, police said.
