More victims sought after father, son charged with human trafficking

A woman called police to a Vaughan hotel last January to report she was held against her will, sexually assaulted and told she must work in the sex trade

Investigators with the York Regional Police Human Trafficking Section are asking any additional victims to come forward after two men, a father and son, were charged with human-trafficking-related offences.

In June 2019, an investigation began involving a suspect, Tyrone McEwan who was believed to be involved in human trafficking after investigators received information about a victim who had been forced to work in the sex trade.

On Friday, Jan. 24, 2020, at 11 a.m., police responded to an unknown trouble call at a hotel located at 6700 Highway 7, in the City of Vaughan. A female victim reported that she had been at the hotel with Courtney McEwan, and was held against her will, sexually assaulted, and was told she would have to work in the sex trade.

On Feb. 23, 2020, Tyrone McEwan was arrested and was charged. On Wednesday, March 11, 2020, Courtney McEwan was arrested in Peel Region and is now facing charges.

Investigators are releasing images of the accused parties and want to encourage any additional victims to please come forward.

  • Trafficking in persons
  • Material benefit from trafficking in persons
  • Material benefit from sexual services
  • Advertising sexual services
  • Withholding or destroying documents in relation to trafficking in persons
  • Fraud under $5,000

Charged: 

  • Courtney McEwan, 53, of the City of Brampton

Charges: 

  • Procuring to provide sexual services for consideration
  • Sexual assault
  • Forcible confinement
  • Assault causing bodily harm
  • Fail to comply with release order
  • Fail to comply with undertaking
