Mom's car impounded when 16-year-old charged with stunt driving

Since March 1, stunt driving charges have doubled to 306, compared to 149 during the same period last year, York Regional Police say

Nine drivers had their vehicles impounded overnight after they were caught driving in excess of 50 kilometres per hour over the speed limit in what continues to be a problem of high-speed driving during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In one of the incidents, on Monday, May 11, 2020, shortly after 11 p.m., an officer was conducting speed enforcement on Hwy 50, north of Major Mackenzie Drive West, in the City of Vaughan. The officer spotted a vehicle travelling north at a high rate of speed through a 70-kilometre-per-hour zone. The officer confirmed that the vehicle’s speed was 160 kilometres per hour.

Charged: 

  • 22-year-old from the Town of Oakville

Charges:  

  • Stunt Driving  
  • Speeding 160 km/h in a posted 70 km/h zone  
  • Seven-day driver’s licence suspension  
  • Seven-day vehicle impound

In another incident that occurred on Monday May 4, 2020, shortly before 10 p.m., an officer was conducting speed enforcement on Highway 7, near Keele Street, in the City of Vaughan, which is a 60-kilometre-per-hour zone. The officer spotted a vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed and confirmed the vehicle was driving at 120 kilometres per hour.

The 16-year-old driver from the City of Toronto was stopped and found to have a G1 drivers licence and was unaccompanied by a licensed driver. In the cruiser’s dashcam video, you can hear the call the officer had to make to the driver’s mother, informing her that her vehicle was going to be impounded for seven days as a result of her son’s high-speed driving.

High speeds on relatively empty York Region roads continue to be a problem. From March 1, 2020, through to May 11, 2020, officers laid 306 charges for stunt driving for vehicles travelling in excess of 50 kilometres per hour over the speed limit, versus 149 charges during the same time period in 2019. Speed kills. Police are urging drivers to slow down and obey posted speed limits.
