A 33-year-old male from Toronto has been sentenced after pleading guilty in connection with two violent sexual assaults, one in Richmond Hill in 2014 and the other in Mississauga in 2013.

Jaehyun 'David' Cho, 33, pleaded guilty to sexual assault with a weapon, sexual assault causing bodily harm and disguise with intent before the Hon. Justice Ghosh and was sentenced to 8-1/2 years in custody Monday, Jan. 30, according to a York Regional Police news release.

The sentencing is in relation to the sexual assault that occurred Nov. 13, 2014 after a woman got off a transit bus at about 12:30 a.m. at Yonge Street and Canyon Hill Avenue in Richmond Hill. She was approached by a man armed with a knife who demanded money, then pulled her into a field and sexually assaulted her, police said.

On Sept. 27, 2013, around midnight in Mississauga, a woman was sexually assaulted after exiting a transit bus near South Service Road and Crestview Avenue. A suspect had produced a weapon, grabbed the victim and pulled her into a darkened area, where he sexually assaulted her.

A lengthy and thorough investigation was conducted, but the suspect remained unidentified. In the fall of 2021, the Centre for Forensic Sciences notified investigators of a forensic link from an unrelated incident. Officers pursued this new information, which ultimately led to identifying the suspect, police said.

On March 11, 2022, the accused was charged with: kidnapping (two counts); sexual assault with a weapon (two counts); sexual assault causing bodily harm; uttering threats to cause death (two counts); disguise with intent (two counts); robbery (two counts) and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose (two counts)
