A 25-year-old man from the City of Brampton has been charged with impaired-related criminal driving offences, as well as firearms-related offences, after pointing a gun at a fellow motorist.
On Tuesday, March 24, 2020, shortly before 11 p.m., York Regional Police responded to the parking lot of a gas station located at Highway 50 and Rutherford Road in the City of Vaughan for a weapons offence. When officers arrived, they spoke with two victims who advised they had been parked in the lot when a vehicle pulled up next to them.
The driver of the vehicle began threatening them and pointed a handgun. The victims drove away and called police. A short time later, officers located and stopped the vehicle northbound on Highway 50, north of Highway 7 and placed both suspects under arrest.
The driver appeared to be impaired and was taken to #4 District headquarters where he was given a breath test, which he failed. His driver’s licence was suspended and his vehicle impounded. Officers also located an imitation handgun, as well as a substance believed to be cocaine.

In 2019, York Regional Police received 3,500 calls to 9-1-1 reporting suspected impaired drivers as part of our Safe Roads, Your Call program. That was an increase of nearly 18 per cent from the previous year. Many of those calls led to the more than 1,700 impaired-related criminal charges being laid.
