Man arrested in Vaughan in connection with romance scam in Quebec

Investigators with the York Regional Police High-Risk Offenders Unit have arrested 47-year-old Andre Marcel Vautour, who was wanted on a warrant in connection with a fraudulent romance scam investigation in Quebec.

In September 2022, York Regional Police received information that the wanted man was residing in the Vaughan area while attempting to evade police.

Members of the High-Risk Offenders unit began an investigation, working in conjunction with police in Quebec. On Wednesday, Oct. 5, 2022, officers successfully located the suspect and he was taken into custody. He will be transported to Quebec to face fraud-related charges.

York Regional Police continues to receive numerous reports of romance scams. In these types of frauds, the suspect creates a persona, often with fake details. Suspects use a number of tactics and schemes to build trust and establish a relationship with victims. These relationships often progress very quickly to an emotional point where the victim is so invested in the relationship that they feel compelled to help when the suspect begins to ask for money.
