Man arrested after girls, 11 and 15, sexually assaulted at Newmarket mall

York Regional Police have charged Sina Shafti-Keramat, 25, of Toronto after two sexual assaults occurred at Upper Canada Mall in Newmarket.

On July 5, York Regional Police responded to the mall at Yonge Street and Davis Drive for a report of a sexual assault against an 11-year-old girl. 

A male suspect followed the victim and then touched her in a sexual manner, police said.

On July 7, police were called back to the mall after the security staff recognized the suspect, who was taken into custody, according to a news release from York Regional Police. 

Police said that through the investigation, they located a second victim, 15, who was touched in a sexual manner while at the mall on June 16. 

Shafti-Keramat is charged with two counts of sexual assault and two counts of sexual interference - person under 16, police said.

He has also been charged with two counts of fail to comply with judicial release order related to prior offences, police said.
