York Regional Police is reminding our citizens to be safe and follow the laws this hunting season.

As a result of the pandemic, more citizens have been getting involved in outdoor activities and we anticipate that this hunting season may see an increase in participation. It is the requirement and responsibility of all hunters to operate safely and know the laws surrounding their firearms, what they are permitted to hunt and the locations where it is allowed.

There are significant legal requirements and responsibilities that go along with owning, transporting, carrying and using firearms.

  • Ensure that your firearms licence is up to date and carry it with you
  • When transporting your firearm and ammunition, ensure that the gun unloaded and both are properly secured. It is an offence to have a loaded firearm in a vehicle
  • Treat all firearms as if they were loaded until proven safe. Never point a firearm at another person

Remember that in an emergency, help can find you faster if you are able to relay your exact location to emergency call takers.

Learn to familiarize yourself with the GPS on your phone or consider installing an app that can assist you with determining your location.

Always wear appropriate clothing for the weather and plan for all visibility considerations.

Bring a fully charged cell phone, plan your route and tell someone where you’re going and what time you expect to be back.

Ensure you know exactly where you are permitted to hunt and remain in those areas. Avoid trespassing on private property and ensure that no one else nearby that could potentially be injured.

You are obligated to carry the appropriate hunting licenses with you at all times.

Familiarize yourself with the hunting season dates and times and game possession limits in your area.
