This vehicle was impounded after the driver was found to be going 216 km/hour in an 80 km/hour zone.

A driver was stopped after driving nearly three times the speed limit in East Gwillimbury, York Regional Police said.

In a tweet, YRP said that on Sept. 5 a road safety officer spotted the vehicle going 216 km/hour in a posted 80 km/hour zone on Woodbine Avenue near Mount Albert Road.

The driver of the vehicle was charged with dangerous operation, stunt driving, and speeding.

As a result, the vehicle was impounded for 14 days and the driver's licence was suspended for 30 days. This is the automatic penalty for stunt driving in Ontario.

On roads with a speed limit of 80 km/hour or more, it is considered stunt driving to go 50 km/hour or more over the limit.

Editor's note: A previous version of this story incorrectly stated stunt driving as going 40 km/hour over in an 80 km/hour zone. It has been updated.
