A driver was killed after a vehicle left the road, flipped over and burst into flames in a single-vehicle collision on Davis Drive in Mount Albert early this morning.

York Regional Police responded to reports of a vehicle on fire in a ditch on Davis near Centre Street Thursday, Aug. 31 at 4:40 a.m., police said.

A Chevrolet sedan had left the road, flipped over, came to rest against a hydro pole and was engulfed in flames on the south side of Davis, police said. After the fire was extinguished, a lone occupant was found deceased inside the vehicle.

The deceased person has not yet been identified, police said.

"Davis Drive at this location is a two-lane roadway going east and west in a rural setting. Investigators believe the vehicle had been travelling westbound on Davis Drive before it crossed into the eastbound lane, where it struck an embankment, sustained heavy damage and caught fire," police said in a news release.

Davis is currently closed to traffic in both directions between Highway 48 and York-Durham Line for the investigation of this fatal collision.

Police are appealing to any witnesses who have not yet spoken with police, as well as anyone who may have dashcam or home security video recordings of the area around the time of the collision, to contact investigators as soon as possible.
