York Regional Police officially opened a human rights education classroom today to offer young people an opportunity to learn about their rights and responsibilities in our global community.

"This is truly crime and hate prevention for our future leaders," Chief Eric Jolliffe said at the event today at the Community Safety Village of York Region in Whitchurch-Stouffville.

The focus of the classroom is to educate the region’s youth in human rights and responsibilities, and the importance of peace building and global citizenship.

"Educators hope to inspire commitment to peaceful co-existence in an ever-changing world," York Regional Police said in a news release.

Students from kindergarten to Grade 5 will visit the classroom, which will also be used by community groups and for special events supporting inclusive and cross-cultural learning.

The classroom was officially named by an Elder from the Chippewas of Georgina Island First Nation.
