South Simcoe Police Service is warning residents about the latest frauds in our communities.
In one scam, suspects posing as Service Canada employees make multiple phone calls claiming the victim's identification and Social Insurance Number were used in an identity fraud. Victims are asked to "verify" their banking information and SIN in order to be "excused" from the fictitious debt. Then victims are instructed to withdraw sums of money and send it via BitCoin to the suspects.
The phone numbers can look legitimate but if you receive one of these calls hang up. Government agencies do not conduct business this way. They don't request or issue payment by money transfer services, gift cards or digital currency.
Another fraud reported to us involves a bogus drivers test website. It was reported to us by a resident attempting to book a G driver's licence test online.
The website in question appears legitimate but once you enter your information, scammers attempt fraudulent activity on your bank accounts.
Police are urging residents to be alert when searching for services and information on the internet. What you think is a legitimate website may in fact be fake. Take the time to have a close look to ensure you found the real website and not one created by scammers.
