UPDATE: Baby rushed to hospital in critical condition, man in custody

A 61-year-old man from China is charged with attempted murder, York Regional Police say

UPDATE, Feb. 1: A 61-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder in relation to the injured baby at a Markham hotel. He is from China and is a family member of the injured infant, police said in a news release. 

His identity is not being released to protect the identity of the victim. 

The infant remains in critical condition and is receiving emergency care after being rushed to the hospital Jan. 31

York Regional Police had one person in custody and were investigating after an infant was rushed to hospital with serious injuries Tuesday afternoon. 

At around 2:10 p.m., York Regional Police officers were called to a hotel in the area of Woodbine Avenue and Highway 7 in Markham regarding an injured two-month-old baby, according to a YRP news release.

The infant was rushed to hospital and was in critical condition receiving emergency care. 

An adult male was arrested at the scene and the investigation was ongoing. 

Police said residents in the neighbourhood should expect to see an ongoing police presence, however there was no concern for public safety. 

Investigators were appealing to anyone who may have seen or heard anything in the area around the time of the Jan. 31 incident to come forward.
