Arsonist targeted York Region Transit bus shelters, police say

Police are seeking a suspect believed to have set three fires on Clark in Vaughan Jan. 20 and 21

Fires were set at three York Region Transit bus shelters on Clark Avenue in Vaughan Jan. 20 and 21, causing damage of more than $8,000, York Regional Police said.

On Saturday, Jan. 20 at about 10:15 p.m., police received a report of a bench on fire inside a bus shelter at Clark and Hilda Avenue. When police arrive on scene, Vaughan Fire and Rescue Service had extinguished the fire.

On Sunday, Jan. 21 at about 5:40 a.m., a garbage bin was set on fire beside a bus shelter at Clark and Yonge Street, police said.

Police said a man arrived in the area at 3:40 a.m., placed an unknown accelerant into a garbage bin and set it on fire. The bin became fully engulfed by 5:40 a.m., when police were called.

Then at 3:42 a.m., a fire was set in a garbage bin next to another bus shelter at Clark and Charles Street.

Police have released video surveillance of the suspect, described as male, white, wearing a black jacket with a grey hoodie underneath, blue jeans and black shoes, who is believed to be responsible for all three fires.

Police are appealing to anyone with information or who witnessed any suspicious activity to come forward. Investigators would also like to speak with anyone with video surveillance or dashcam footage in the area around the time of these incidents.
