An arrest warrant has been issued for a 23-year-old Newmarket man who escaped from police after more than $20,000 in cash and drugs was seized during a routine traffic stop in Beaverton.
A Durham Regional Police officer stopped a vehicle believed to be driven by a suspended driver near Maple Beach Road and Garden Gate Saturday, April 4, at about 9:30 p.m., according to a news release.
As the officer approached the vehicle, a strong odour of cannabis was detected, police said. The officer ordered the female driver and a male passenger out of the vehicle, and during the investigation, the man ran off and was able to escape the officer who gave chase.
More than $6,300 in cash, about $14,150 in fentanyl and cocaine, along with cellphones and a weigh scale, were seized from the vehicle, police said.
The Newmarket man is facing multiple charges, including possess schedule, substance for the purpose of trafficking x3; escape lawful custody of a peace officer; and fail to attend court, police said.
