UPDATE: Standoff with armed man in Newmarket residence ends with peaceful surrender

The standoff, which had closed Niagara from Davis to Ontario Wednesday night, lasted about eight hours

UPDATE: Following a standoff of about eight hours yesterday, an armed man peacefully surrendered to York Regional Police prior to midnight last night.

No shots were fired throughout the incident that began at about 4 p.m. yesterday, June 2, according to a neighbour.

Niagara Street was reopened at about midnight.

York Regional Police have closed a portion of Niagara Street in Newmarket where an armed person is barricaded in a residence.

Police responded at about 4 p.m. Wednesday, June 2 to the area of Niagara and Simcoe Street and have set up a full command post for the investigation, according to Sgt. John McRae.  

Despite the heavy police presence in the area, there is no concern for the public, McRae said.

Residents in the area remain in their homes, he added. 

Niagara is closed from Davis Drive to Ontario Street, and citizens are being advised to avoid the area.
