UPDATE: Air2 assists in arrests in Whitchurch-Stouffville carjacking

Police say victim’s Mercedes was rear-ended, suspects demanded his keys and cellphone

UPDATE, July 11: A third vehicle operated by the suspects in an attempted carjacking in Whitchurch-Stouffville has yet to be recovered, York Regional Police said today.

While police recovered a Range Rover, which had been stolen in Toronto and was used to block the victim’s Mercedes, they continue to search for the BMW that rear-ended the Mercedes. 

The Air 2 helicopter had located the three vehicles travelling together, but they then separated and travelled in different directions, police said. 

Officers on the ground, along with officers in the emergency response unit, stopped the Range Rover in Mississauga and apprehended four suspects.

The Mercedes G-Wagon was located in Vaughan and one more suspect was apprehended. 

Syed Ali Hussain, 31, of Brampton faces an additional charge breach of probation, police said.

Original Story, July 6: 

With the assistance of its Air2 helicopter, York Regional Police arrested five individuals and recovered a stolen vehicle following a carjacking in Whitchurch-Stouffville earlier today.

A man was driving a Mercedes G-Wagon when he was rear ended by another vehicle on Stouffville Road and Highway 404 Thursday, July 6 at approximately 1:45 a.m., police said in a news release. 

The suspects approached the victim, demanded his keys and cellphone, then fled in his Mercedes, police said.

Air2 located the vehicle and began observations on both the stolen Mercedes and another vehicle operated by the suspects, police added.

Officers on the ground, along with officers in the emergency response unit, stopped the vehicles and took the suspects into custody.

Mohammad Jamal Rashid, 20, of Barrie; Blake White, 24, of Saint John’s, Nfld; Syed Ali Shan, 20, of Vaughan, Syed Ali Hussain, 31, of Brampton, and Natalee Newton, 20, of Midhurst are charged with robbery, disguise with intent, and possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000.

Police urge anyone with information or video footage to come forward.
