Officers with the York Regional Police Road Safety Bureau, in partnership with the Ontario Provincial Police and the Ministry of Transportation (MTO), conducted a commercial motor vehicle RIDE program and vehicle inspection in the Township of King on Feb. 8, 2021.

The safety blitz took place in the early morning hours as part of our ongoing commitment to ensure the safety of all motorists on York Region roads. During the program, 155 commercial motor vehicle drivers were stopped and tested for the presence of alcohol.

Under the Highway Traffic Act, operators of commercial motor vehicles must have a blood alcohol concentration of zero. None of the drivers stopped had alcohol in their systems and we thank those drivers who continue to prioritize road safety and drive sober. We remind all drivers that alcohol can remain in your system well into the morning after consuming alcohol the night before.

Each of the commercial motor vehicles stopped was also checked for safety defects and driver documentation by the team. Two vehicles were taken out of service due to mechanical defects and safety violations. Fifteen charges were laid for vehicle defects and documentation offences under the Highway Traffic Act.

Drivers and operators of commercial motor vehicles are responsible for ensuring their vehicles and their loads are inspected and safe before they hit the road.

Any defect that compromises the safe operation of a vehicle can result in it being removed from service and appropriate fines.
