York Regional Police continues to prioritize road safety, responding to incidents of excessive speeding, stunt driving and racing.

This weekend, 10 drivers were charged and their vehicles taken off our roads for driving more than 50 kilometres per hour over posted speed limits.

On Friday, Oct. 16, 2020, officers observed two vehicles that appeared to be racing each other in the area of Bathurst Glen Golf Course, in the Town of Richmond Hill. The vehicles reached speeds of 159 kilometres per hour, which was 89 kilometres per hour over the posted limit.

Both vehicles were seized, towed and several charges, including speeding and stunt driving, were laid against the drivers, along with licence suspensions.

On Saturday, Oct. 17, 2020, a driver was charged for travelling 53 kilometres per hour over the posted speed limit. His vehicle was seized and licence suspended.

Through investigation, officers learned the driver had been charged for stunt driving earlier this year.

Also on Saturday, a female driver was charged with stunt driving after passing an emergency medical services vehicle and reaching speeds up to 180 kilometres per hour on Highway 407. When officers approached the vehicle, they noticed a young boy was a passenger in the back of the car.

In other weekend occurrences, officers charged drivers with aggressive driving, which included excessive speeds and not sharing the roadway in a safe manner.

Vehicles impounded include a Corvette and Ferrari.

Road safety, speeding and aggressive driving will always be a high priority of the York Regional Police. Anyone caught driving more than 50 kilometres per hour over the posted speed limit can expect to be charged, have their vehicle towed and their licence suspended.

Citizens are encouraged to report unsafe driving, either by calling 911 if the incident appears to be a potentially life-threatening emergency, calling the non-emergency line for vehicle gatherings that appear to be preparing to race or by reporting the incident through our Road Watch program.
