On Monday, November 7, 2022 at 72 years of age, William (Bill) James Steed passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at Southlake Regional Health Centre.

Bill was born on April 23, 1950 in the Toronto area, where he grew up on family farms with his parents and two sisters. He worked for 37 years as a Toronto Police Officer out of 32 Division, ending his career as a community relations officer. Bill found joy in serving his community and the friendships he built with his fellow officers. He had a love for old cars and oldies music, blue and white striped dress shirts, mowing his lawn on his John Deere, and washing his cars until they sparkled. Survived by Sandy, his soulmate and loving wife of 23 years, together they enjoyed the simple things in life: going for drives around the lake, splitting a Tim’s muffin and bagel, and relaxing in their beautiful backyard on their rocking chairs. They created lasting memories traveling together to destinations like Italy, the Caribbean, the Rocky Mountains and winters away in Florida.

Lovingly remembered by his children, Shannon Major (Jay), Ashlee Ponting (Mike Dagenais), Robin Spraggs (Len) and William, his sister Sandy Shaw and brother-in-law Dave Price, and many more friends and family members. His 9 grandchildren (Jake, Olivia, Travis, Evyn, Cole, Audrey, Hadley, Noa and Smith) will always fondly remember their grandpa “Billy.” Bill is predeceased by his sister Shirley Price and his parents, William and Dorothy. Throughout his later years, Bill had many challenges with his health, yet always maintained a positive outlook and was blessed with incredible care at St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto, the Stronach Centre in Newmarket and from his family doctor, Dr. Paul Randall. Special thanks to the amazing ICU staff at Southlake Hospital for their gentle, empathic care, as Bill bravely fought right up to the very end, showing an astonishing will to live. In lieu of flowers, Bill’s family would appreciate a donation to The Kidney Foundation or Southlake Regional Health Centre.

Visitation will be held at Roadhouse and Rose Funeral Home in Newmarket on Monday, November 14, 2022 from 7-9 pm and Tuesday, November 15, 2022 from 10-11am, followed by a service and reception at 11 am. Interment will take place at 2 pm at St. John’s Cemetery in Newmarket.
