On the night of February 1, 2024, the world lost a true force of wit and warmth as Carolyn (Careen) O’Connor gracefully exited life's stage at Southlake Regional Centre in Newmarket, Ontario, succumbing to nature's call at the age of 81. Born on April 17, 1942, in Sudbury, Ontario, to the dynamic duo of Daniel O’Connor and Stella McDonald, Carreen navigated life with a flair that left an indelible mark.

She's now likely stirring up lively conversations, sipping coffee, and maybe even sneaking a cigarette around a celestial family table reunited with her father Daniel, mother Stella, and mischievous siblings Patrick, John (Audrey), Daniel (Mary Jo), Stephen, and sister Maris. We imagine heaven's prepared a special place setting for them.

In the earthly realm, Careen's spirit lives on through Stephen’s partner Tracey Bailey, a brigade of nieces and nephews (Sean, Daniel, Mary, Erin, Kevin, Seamus, Shannon), and a merry troop of great nieces and nephews. Let's not forget a heartfelt nod to her cherished friend and confidant, Shelley O’Connor. Carreen, a long-time parishioner of both Christ the King and Our Lady of Hope, leaves behind a legacy etched in faith.

Careen, a healthcare maven hailing from Sudbury, carved out an illustrious career. From ushering in bundles of joy as an obstetrical nurse at Saint Joseph’s Hospital to embracing change in the latter part of her nursing journey, focusing on cancer care at the Northeast Cancer Centre.

Beyond her professional pursuits, Careen was a connoisseur of wit, a fashionista, not a maestro in the kitchen, and someone who could spin a gambling tale with the best of them (even if it cost a mortgage payment or two). Never one to succumb to authority, she asked to be taken out for a cigarette at 11:35 pm, and when denied this luxury, Careen decided to move on at 11:50 pm where she can conduct her earthly pleasure. Now, she finds herself in the loving embrace of her family, leaving behind a legacy sprinkled with laughter, love, and a dash of daring charm.

A service will be held on Saturday May 11, 2024 at 11:00 am at Jackson and Bernard Funeral Home, Sudbury, Ontario, followed by reception. Friends may gather at 10:30 am. Special thanks to the warm and compassionate care provided by staff at South Lake Residential Care Village in New Market.
