Jean was born in the Netherlands in 1933. As a teen she enjoyed working in her parents' General Store in Schipluiden. It was around that time she met Pieter and their love for each other flourished. They were engaged to be married before Pieter immigrated to Canada in 1951 to establish a life they would share in the "land of opportunity". After weekly correspondence via airmail over the next few years, in April 1954 Jean waved good-bye to her family from the deck of a ship bound for Canada to be reunited with the love of her life. On May 15th they were wed and enjoyed almost 46 years together until Pieter passed on January 11th, 2000. They were blessed with 4 children and many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Jean had a real gift of servitude in all aspects of her life which naturally led her to become an active volunteer. She helped with the clean-up after Hurricane Katrina, was involved in Share & Care, Meals on Wheels and the therapeutic pool at Southlake Hospital.

Jean was a member of Bethel Christian Reformed Church for more than 60 years and played the church organ there for 40 years. Most Sundays she welcomed family, friends, and newcomers to the church into her home to share fellowship, coffee, and her delicious baked goods. She was often called upon to babysit for family which she did happily. Her energy seemed endless!

She enjoyed travelling, camping and spending time with her family and friends. She had a real love for nature and gardening. Jean was very active and once she moved to Tollendale Retirement Home she was often seen walking at her brisk pace multiple times per day and in good weather - often great distances.

Visitation will be held at Roadhouse & Rose Funeral Home, 157 Main St South, Newmarket on Monday April 15, 2024 from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Roadhouse & Rose Tuesday April 16, at 1 pm with a Reception to follow.
