It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of John Scott Miller Brown on March 8th at the age of 94. John will be lovingly remembered by his daughter Alison, grandson Brody, his niece Carol, and his sisters Lilian and Jean.

John was born in Milngavie, Scotland, the gateway to Loch Lomond, before immigrating to Canada in the 1950’s. It is here that he met his wife (Margaret) Sheila at the Toronto Island Beaches, later marrying in 1960.

He was a printer by trade, apprenticing at the local pulp mill in Milngavie and later working at CIP in Toronto until he retired. From 1947-1949 he was stationed in Germany while serving with the Royal Air Force. Upon his discharge he was awarded the highest ranking of character attainable by the RAF. In 1974, he proudly became a Canadian Citizen.

Before immigrating to Canada, John enjoyed cycling tours across the bonny banks of Scotland, performed in many local plays in his hometown, and as one of the Brown clan, always loved a good ceilidh. In Canada he worked hard; putting in overtime hours and bartending part-time to provide a good life for his family. He was a keen fisherman and enjoyed Scottish dancing until the age of 88, taking great pride in wearing his kilt. He was also an avid bowler, belonging to various lawn bowling clubs; he held many organizational roles within the club and was fondly referred to as JB by his fellow members. He loved visiting the old country, being driven around the countryside, and stopping in at quaint pubs. At home he enjoyed gardening, cooking, crosswording, and watching sports. He was adamant about his independence, and defied his years by managing to live in his own house (and drive his car!) up until his final few months.

John will most be remembered for his welcoming nature, his zest for life, his wit, and his knack for getting the party started by singing! More importantly, he will be remembered as a loving father and grandfather, and a devoted husband, caring for his wife of 53 years even as she battled with Alzheimer’s disease.

John has joined his wife Sheila, his parents Isabella Maxwell Brown (nee Nisbet) and James Renfrew Brown, as well as his five brothers, Thomas, Alex, Jim, David and William. He will be watching over us all from above henceforth.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in memory to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
