BATEMAN, Marion (formerly Cusick)(nee Poole)

Passed away peacefully at Southlake Regional Health Centre,
Newmarket on Tuesday November 14, 2023, at 91 years of age.

Loving wife of the late William “Bill” Bateman.

Proud mother of Debbie, Cindy, Patty, and Fred Cusick.

Much loved grandmother of Derek Blount and Jeffery Cusick.

Sister of the late Frank (Joan) Poole and Harry (Margaret) Poole. Daughter of the late Thomas and Ada Poole.

Marion was born in Montreal and was the first in her family to be born in Canada after her parents imigrated to Canada from England.

Marion was a single Mother and raised 4 children in Holland Landing at a time when that was mostly unheard of. Marion was also considered a Mother to many of her children's friends that she took under her wings over the years. To this day many still call her Mom.

Marion was a trail blazer being the first Woman Shop Steward of Local 79, in the early seventies, when she worked at Green Acres home for the Aged in Newmarket.  She also was the first woman to fight a bankruptcy and win. Her lawyer said she set a precedence in law.
After marrying Bill Bateman, in 1981, she moved to Streetsville and together they ran their own business called Marion's S.O.S., which stood for Support of Seniors. Together they helped take care of Streetsville and were friends of the Mayor of Mississauga, the late Hazel McCallion and her husband. Bill was nicknamed Mr Streetsville.

She spent many years driving people to medical appointments in Toronto and Hamilton, staying with them, and bringing them home safely, when their families could not be there.  For all their volunteering work they received honors and awards including the Queens Jubliee award.

Marion was also a proud member of the Streetsville United Church in Mississauga and a long time member of the Order of Rosicrucians.

The family would like to thank the staff at Southlake Residential Care Village, Newmarket for the care and compassion given to our Mother during her stay.

Visitation will be held on Sunday November 19, 2023, from 12-2 p.m. followed by a service in the Chapel at 2 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to Southlake Residential Care Village or the charity of your choice.
