U9 Newmarket Renegades mark first full-ice play (13 photos)

Opening ceremony marked the occasion of the move from half-ice to full-ice games for the young Newmarket Minor Hockey Association players

The U9 Newmarket Renegades players battled it out on full ice for the first Saturday at Ray Twinney Recreation Complex.

"This is a very big day for this age group as they have only played on half-ice to this point in their minor hockey careers," said Chris Neale, Newmarket Minor Hockey Association marketing and communications director.

The NMHA celebrated this occasion with pre-game ceremonies and player announcements, with Deputy Mayor Tom Vegh attending the opening ceremony.

The U9MD White team tied 1-1 against the Markham Waxers, while the U9MD Red team played the Georgina Blaze, losing 8 - 4, with U18 Rep team players there for the opening ceremony and to cheer them on.
