The U9 Newmarket Renegades players battled it out on full ice for the first Saturday at Ray Twinney Recreation Complex.
"This is a very big day for this age group as they have only played on half-ice to this point in their minor hockey careers," said Chris Neale, Newmarket Minor Hockey Association marketing and communications director.
The NMHA celebrated this occasion with pre-game ceremonies and player announcements, with Deputy Mayor Tom Vegh attending the opening ceremony.
The U9MD White team tied 1-1 against the Markham Waxers, while the U9MD Red team played the Georgina Blaze, losing 8 - 4, with U18 Rep team players there for the opening ceremony and to cheer them on.
