A Richmond Hill high school is hosting a charity basketball game Feb. 25 in honour of Jonathan Gayle, who was murdered in 2018.

The high school of former York Region sports broadcaster Jonathan Gayle is honouring his memory with a charity basketball game in February.

St. Theresa of Lisieux Catholic High School in Richmond Hill is hosting the event Feb. 25 in recognition of Gayle, who was murdered at age 29 in a carjacking in December 2018.

Members of the school’s alumni association will play, raising money for Kid Sport Canada and a memorial garden dedicated to Gayle.

“Jonathan was an outstanding student-athlete and class valedictorian at STL,” Tidal League Media Network said in a news release, adding that as a charity, Kid Sports Canada “best aligns with Jonathan Gayle’s values as a student-athlete, youth sports coach, and sports broadcaster.”

Gayle had worked for TSN as a story editor and broadcaster before his death. He was shot and killed in his vehicle in Toronto, with two men found guilty of murder in 2022.

The event will feature an unveiling of the plans for a Jonathan Gayle Memorial Garden, along with halftime shows, vendors and displays. A total of 23 alumni basketball players are confirmed to be participating.

The event starts at 7 p.m. Feb. 25 at the school, 230 Shaftsbury Ave., Richmond Hill. There is a $20 admission at the door, and the news release said Kid Sport Canada reps will be invited to issue charitable tax receipts for each ticket purchased.
