Battle of Yonge set for this weekend

With the series currently tied, it's an important year as Newmarket and Aurora take the ice

NEWMARKET MINOR HOCKEY ASSOCIATION

The Battle of Yonge is entering its 13th year and consists of all representative hockey teams from Aurora playing all representative hockey teams from Newmarket in a home and home weekend series. 

This year’s battle takes place from Oct. 25 to 28 and will consist of 58 games from Novice A to Midget AA. The series is currently tied at six so this is an important year for both sides.

The winning association receives a trophy to display in their office and a year of bragging rights while the losing association must display their competitor’s jersey in their office for one year. 

Weekend events include BBQ’s, local vender at various venues, and food drive for local food banks. 

Newmarket will be hosting the official opening at 8:45 p.m. Friday, Oct. 26 at Magna Centre, 800 Mulock Dr, Newmarket, Ont., with a ceremonial faceoff at the Midget AA game at 9 p.m. 

Federal and municipal politicians, local association and league representatives, as well as athletes and parents will be on hand.
