Zombies are taking over Main Street in Newmarket this Halloween.

St. John Ambulance York Region is hosting its second annual Zombie Hunt and Walk.

Last year they hosted 31 at-home daily challenges throughout October, with a different local business sponsoring each day.

Now that they are allowed to be in person this year, they have switched it up.

“We wanted to keep the support for local businesses running, so we partnered with the Shop Local campaign and we’re doing a draw from now until Halloween where people can find little ballots in local businesses. So while they’re supporting local businesses they can earn a ballot which they can use to enter to win a prize from our event sponsors,” said Jason Colterman of St. John Ambulance.

A lot of the participating businesses are in Newmarket.

“We do have some from all over the place. The concentration is more so Main Street Newmarket, we have some over on Leslie,” he said.

As well as "the hunt" portion of the event, on Sunday, Oct. 31, they are hosting a walk down Main Street. Participants will meet at Riverwalk Commons before making their way up in down Main Street, donning their best undead look.

“It doesn’t have to be zombies, we’re not going to tell someone that Spiderman’s not a zombie if that’s what they chose to come as, but the idea of the theme is that they’ll come dressed up as zombies,” Colterman said.

Registration for the walk is happening now online

The event is open to people of all ages but space is limited with 100 people per time slot, which are at noon, 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.

It costs $10 per person with the proceeds supporting St. John Ambulance’s community services, including first responders, guide dog program, youth services, and car seat education.

For those that want to support the cause but are unable to participate in the zombie walk, you can make a donation online through the registration page.

Businesses interested in participating in the hunt can also reach out to the organization to get a ballot for their store.
