A town-wide community cleanup is happening on May 7 to help beautify Newmarket's trails, parks, and other greenspaces.
The cleanup day, sponsored by the Chris Cartwright Team, will feature events in each ward and all residents are invited to participate. You can drop by one of the locations listed to pick up a cleaning kit and get to work collecting garbage.
The kits include a reusable water bottle, a pair of gloves, a garbage bag, a recycling bag, and safety tips.
All the events take place on Saturday, May 7, but start and end times may vary by ward. Cleanup kits can be picked up at the following locations:
- Ward 1: Frank Stronach Park, Memorial Circle from 9 a.m. to noon
- Ward 2: Fairgrounds, Muriel Street, from 9 a.m. to noon
- Ward 3: George Richardson Park - South, Bayview Parkway from 9 a.m. to noon
- Ward 4: Maple Leaf Public School, 155 Longford Dr. from 9 a.m. to noon
- Ward 5: Farmer's Market at Riverwalk Commons, 200 Doug Duncan Dr. from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
- Ward 6: Paul Semple Park, Savage Road from 9 a.m. to noon
- Ward 7: Environmental Park, Woodspring Avenue from 9 a.m. to noon
The Town of Newmarket will provide you with a list of target locations, so you can choose the one that works best for you. The list can be found on the town's website.
Once you have finished collecting garbage and recycling from your chosen spot, you can leave the tied bags near the permanent garbage receptacles in the park or area you were cleaning. If there is no garbage bin you are asked to leave the bags by a numbered light post. Town staff will be circulating to collect the bags.
For those who are unable to attend the cleanup on May 7 but still want to help out, the town will continue to provide cleanup kits from May 8 to 22. They can be picked up at any municipal customer service kiosk in town. You can then collect trash wherever you want and leave your filled bags as stated above.
Community cleanup participants are reminded to stay off private property, avoid railway tracks, rivers, and roadways, not to pick up sharp objects, needles or anything dangerous, and that children under 12 should be supervised.
