More than $1 million has been raised for the United Way Greater Toronto by employees of the Regional Municipality of York and York Regional Police.

The donation of $1,025,000 marks 27 consecutive years of giving and more than $7 million raised to the charity that supports critical social services throughout the region.

“On behalf of York Regional council, I would like to congratulate and thank York Region and York Regional Police teams for their outstanding efforts during the 2019-2020 fundraising campaign,” said York Region Chairman and CEO Wayne Emmerson in a news release. “Members in our community have never needed us more than they do right now, and even during the most challenging health crisis of our time, our employees are demonstrating their commitment to our vision to create strong, caring and safe communities.”

The campaign has become the top fundraiser for United Way in the region and one of the top public-sector campaigns in the GTA.

“This has been a tough year for everyone, and we know our partner charities are working hard to keep up to meet the needs of our vulnerable residents,” said police Chief Jim MacSween. “Donations fuel the programs and agencies that provide this much needed care and support to victims of domestic violence, people in crisis, those who are homeless and our youth. We are proud to partner with York Region on this important initiative.”

The 2019-2020 United Way campaign highlights include an employee payroll donation program and numerous employee-driven fundraising events and initiatives such as spring and holiday markets and online auctions.
