York Region residents can apply for YRDSB trustee position

York Region residents can apply to be a candidate in the upcoming byelection to fill the position of trustee in Richmond Hill for the York Region District School Board.

The City of Richmond Hill is now accepting nominations for the YRDSB trustee byelection on Monday, July 15 for Richmond Hill wards 1, 2 and 4 following the resignation of trustee Crystal Yu as of March 31, 2024.

"We respect Trustee Yu’s decision to focus on her family and their health," board chair Ron Lynn said in a letter to YRDSB families. "First elected in 2022, Trustee Yu has served the community of Richmond Hill and all of York Region with care and dedication and developed a very tight connection with her community before and during her time as a trustee." 

To run for office as a school board trustee, a candidate must be:

  • a Canadian citizen
  • at least 18 years of age
  • a resident in the area of jurisdiction of the board (York Region).

Elected by residents, the trustee is guided by the Education Act and responsible for helping set operational policies for all public schools in York Region. The current term will end November 2026.

Candidates will be disqualified if any legislation prevents them from holding a school board trustee office. Employees of the York Region District School Board are only permitted to file a nomination and be a candidate if on the day they file their nomination they are on an unpaid leave absence from the board that ends on voting Day. Potential candidates can review the full eligibility requirements and nomination information at RichmondHill.ca/RHVotes before submitting their nomination. 

Filing a nomination

To file a nomination, eligible candidates must call 905-771-5470 or email [email protected] to make an appointment with the Office of the City Clerk at Richmond Hill’s Municipal Offices at225 East Beaver Creek Rd.

  • Completed forms can be filled in and printed before the scheduled meeting but should only be signed at the meeting.
  • At the time of filing, all candidates must submit a completed nomination form, the declaration of qualification and pay the prescribed filing fee of $100.
  • Forms are available at RichmondHill.ca/RHVotes. Nominations will be accepted until 2 p.m. on Friday, May 31, 2024.

Potential candidates are not permitted to raise funds or spend anything on a campaign until their nomination form has been accepted by the Office of the City Clerk. In addition, all candidates must follow Richmond Hill’s updated election sign bylaw.
