York Region and the Town of Newmarket are urging residents to shop at local businesses as the holiday season gets underway.

The two municipalities have begun their shop local messaging, with York Region holding a contest until Dec. 19. You can take a photo or mention your favourite local business on social media with #ShopLocalYR to win one of five $100 gift cards.

“The holidays are a time for family, friends, gratitude, sharing and, of course, gifting,” York Region said in a news release. “Money spent locally is an investment back into the community.”

Both York Region and Newmarket have regularly promoted shop local efforts over the past several years, including for the holiday shopping season.

The region said there are many benefits to the practice, such as more personalized service and unique products that may not be available anywhere else.

Newmarket has also promoted its Choose Local directory for the holiday season this past week, featuring “hundreds of local Newmarket businesses ready to meet all your holiday needs.” It has encouraged local businesses to claim their listings through an online form

“There’s no better time or reason to support the businesses that are the fabric of our communities and the cornerstone of our local economies,” the region said.
