York Region issues alert for weekend cold snap

York Region has announced a cold weather alert in effect for Jan. 13 and 14 as a cold snap hits the area.

The alert comes with Environment Canada forecasting lows of -13 today and -15 tomorrow with wind chill. The region said it is working with emergency housing, seasonal shelters and community organizations to help residents stay safe and warm.

Both the Ray Twinney Recreation Complex at 100 Eagle St. West and Magna Centre at 800 Mulock Drive will be open as warming centres during regular hours of operation, 5:30 a.m. to 11 p.m.

The Town of Newmarket said you should limit your exposure to extreme cold weather, consider staying indoors and make sure you are well protected.
